Living in Aberdeen Part 9
This blog is a mashup of things I got up to in my final week here.
My last weekend in Aberdeen, the past 9 weeks have gone by so quickly! With one more week remaining before I head back down to London, I managed to do a few things this weekend.
Escape Room
As part of an end of internship social we went to Breakout Games Aberdeen, a place which has various escape rooms to do. Splitting into two groups, we had a go at the 'Frankenstein' and 'Journey to the Amazon' rooms. I did the former, and we had 60 minutes to complete the puzzles and escape. The concept was quite cool for this room - we had to help Dr Frankenstein finish his experiment, before it gets ruined and he turns to a new source for body parts...
The escape room was a great activity to do as a team, as we had to work together to solve the clues. We finished the Frankenstein room with 30 seconds to spare, so it did get quite intense towards the end!
Food & Drink
Aberdeen does have a fair few places to grab food and something to drink. A lot of the chain restaurants you find elsewhere in the UK are found here too. There's a few shopping centres in the city which have most of these in them, one of the larger ones is Union Square. After completing the escape room we went to Brewdog. The food was pretty good, although it was on the slightly pricey side. The atmosphere is quite nice, and Union Square is well maintained and kept.
Nightlife
Something which I hadn't explored much whilst in Aberdeen was the nightlife here. This week after work we went to the College, a bar in Aberdeen which was hosting a pub quiz on Wednesday evening. It was good fun, with the quiz topics ranging from football and flags to X-Factor (some of which were definitely not my forte!). It was a nice place to chill out on in the evening, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Living in London, if you decide to go on a night out clubbing, you almost certainly have to pay to enter. However, up here the nightclub we visited had free entry, which surprised me very much. Aberdeen has a few nightclubs nearby Union Street, the main high road in the city. Most of these you have to pay to enter, however at the Prohibition (that was the name of the club) it was free entry. Just as well, as when we first entered it was pretty quiet despite it being close to midnight. So we decided to leave and come back later on. There are also lots of bars around the city, one of which was near Prohibition called Paramount. We spent some time there before heading back, at which point the place was busier. In terms of song choice, it wasn't stuff I would typically listen to, but nonetheless with good company I enjoyed myself! The nice thing is that I was able to walk back from the club to my flat, meaning no waiting and paying for a taxi.
Shopping
Another thing which I hadn't really done while up here was seeing as to what Aberdeen's shopping scene looked like. As mentioned above, Aberdeen has a couple of shopping centres, the largest of which is Union Street. I headed over there on Saturday afternoon with my mate, and had a bit of a wander. There was a variety of shops, from fashion and electronics to food & drink. I spent some time window shopping in various stores, my favourite being Cotswold Outdoor (the store offers a great shopping experience in my opinion!). So if you are in Aberdeen, there is definitely a choice of stores you can go if you do need something.
This week was a bit of an assortment with what I got up to, no full day trips or anything. Yet it was nice to see what the city life in Aberdeen offers and what people may do on a typical weekend. My final upcoming week will consist of finishing up my internship, and then repacking all my stuff to get ready for the journey down to London!
As always, thanks for reading :)
